Practice Profile

Family physicians in Saskatchewan provide a full scope of general practice including inpatient care and on call emergency coverage. There are opportunities to practise with areas of focus such as surgery, obstetrics, and family practice anesthesia.

Physicians may have the opportunity to participate in teaching undergraduate and post-graduate medical education at the University of Saskatchewan (USask). USask is a research-intensive institution with approximately 26,000 students and 6,500 faculty and staff with campuses throughout the province and a strong reputation for innovation and excellence. It is home to two of the largest science projects in the country – the Canadian Light Source synchrotron and the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization/International Vaccine Centre.

Saskatchewan Licensure Requirements

All practising medical doctors in Canada must be registered with their provincial or territorial medical regulatory authority. In Saskatchewan, the regulatory body is the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS). In Saskatchewan, we rely on the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) to determine if the specialty training is equivalent to Canadian training programs. As a specialist physician trained outside of Canada, your route to obtaining licensure will be determined by your country of training.

 

Medical Council of Canada (MCC) Examinations:

           MCC Qualifying Examination Part 1 (MCCQE1); or

           United States Medical Licensing Examination Steps 1, 2 and 3; or

           Other proof of appropriate medical knowledge acceptable to the CPSS Council;

 

Certification: Letter confirming eligibility for certification in Family Medicine without examination from the CFPC, or the American Board certification in Family Medicine;

 

Currency of Practice: Have been in active independent practice within the past three (3) years and have practiced a minimum of five (5) months in the past five (5) years;

 

English Language Proficiency: may be required;

Medical Degree: From a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools;

Specialty Training: A Letter confirming eligibility for certification in Family Medicine without examination from the CFPC, or the American Board certification in Family Medicine;

 

Remuneration

A variety of payment modalities are available for family physicians including fee-for-service (with optional enrollment in the new Transitional Payment Model), or Primary Health Care contracts. The average earning per year is over:

C$403,000

This does not include on-call, research, academic and other payments.

You may be eligible for up to C$200,000 over 5 years of practice in Family Medicine in Saskatchewan!

 

Experience the rewards of the Rural Physician Incentive Program | available for Family Medicine physicians providing rural and remote health services to eligible communities in Saskatchewan.

 

General Practitioner Specialist Program | Quarterly bonus payments up to

$10,000/quarter and a mentorship program for family physicians who provide anesthesia, surgery, and obstetrics services in rural and regional areas.

 

Family Physician Comprehensive Care Program l Recognizes family physicians for continuity of care when they provide a full range of services. Depending on the location of practice, this program compensates physicians with up to 5.5% annual premium.

 

Parental Leave Fund | Provides up to C$2,000 per week for up to 20 weeks to a physician who is taking maternity, paternity or adoption leave from clinical practice. Take time for what matters most!

 

Retention Fund | Provides financial rewards to physicians who practice in the province for extended periods of time. Depending on years of services the range is C$7,000 to C$14,000 per year (based on full-time practice).
