Job summary
To provide specialist advice, expertise and guidance to front line clinical staff and supply them with the tools to help them eradicate all preventable infection and minimise its effects on the quality of client and patient care. To work as a member of the Infection Prevention & Control Team in monitoring and assessing the risk posed to patients, clients, staff and the public by infectious agents. Assist in the production of an annual infection reduction plan, surveillance data, audit data, implementation of evidence based policies and procedures. Participate in the production and provision of surveillance information, specialised education and audit materials to Trust personnel, patients and relatives. To produce and present infection related data in a meaningful format including report, poster and PowerPoint to groups of staff at all levels of the Trust’s organisation and external agencies.
Main responsibilities
- To assist in identification of sources and trends in infection patterns to enable decisions about prevention of infection measures to be as fully informed as possible.
- To participate in the daily analysis and collation of relevant laboratory data and communicate real time information to the multi-disciplinary clinical team involved.
- To provide specialist advice to Trust staff, patients, visitors and the public in relation to infection prevention and control issues.
- To participate in identifying, investigating and controlling outbreaks of infection/ increased incidents within Trust facilities and provide specialist advice on control measures to be implemented within Trust facilities.
- To complete final outbreak/ increased incidence of infection reports, including learning actions to minimise the incidence of re-occurrence. Monitor implementation of recommendations by further surveillance and auditing.
- To participate in surveillance programmes which have been agreed in accordance with national, regional and local priorities and ensure that findings are fed back and understood by relevant clinical teams.
- Use information produced as a result of surveillance to inform actions contained within the Trust’s annual infection reduction plan.
- To have the appropriate information technology skills to utilise available information and databases to maintain an accurate record of the incidence of significant infection/ infectious agents and to ensure that this information is communicated to relevant professionals.
- To adhere to evidence based standards and assist in their implementation across the Trust.
- To provide specialised advice and support to healthcare staff on relevant prevention and control measures in particular evidenced based care bundles/ ‘high impact interventions’, and aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT).
- To participate and give specialised advice, where necessary, in the planning, implementation and evaluation of care and care pathways for patients and clients at risk from preventable infection.
- To participate in the provision of specialised care, where necessary, in the care of individual patients with infection or at risk of it.
- To give specialised advice in relation to the maintenance of the care environment.
- To participate in monitoring environmental cleanliness during building/ refurbishment projects and giving specialised advice on the maintenance of the environment during these projects.
