The Public Health Nurse is a member of a multi-disciplinary team emphasizing prevention, health promotion, health education, and early identification of individuals or populations at risk. The Public Health Nurse works with individuals, families, groups, and the community to provide services across the life span and within a variety of settings.
Duties will include but not limited to:
- providing comprehensive service delivery in the areas of maternal/newborn health, infant and preschool health, school health, family health, communicable disease control/surveillance, immunization, injury prevention, chronic disease prevention, and health promotion;
- providing health education and promotion, counseling, and referral to individuals, families and community groups by adapting to their needs, lifestyle, culture, and socio-economic situations;
- assessing, planning, initiating, and evaluating appropriate interventions for clients; supporting clients and their families to take responsibility for management of their own health needs;
- fostering positive working relationships with colleagues, the public, other service providers, and community agencies;
- maintaining appropriate records, observations, interventions and outcomes; preparing reports and statistical information. This includes mastery of ISM documentation procedures;
- participating in the development of relevant protocols, policies and procedures, contributing to continuous quality improvement of public health nursing programs;
- participating in committees and working groups; and contributing to the professional development and continued education activities of other staff members;
- acting in a preceptor/mentor role for new staff members and students as required;
- participating in emergency response training in support of disaster preparedness.
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, or a Diploma in Nursing with extensive experience in clinical area may be considered
- Some nursing experience (1-3 yrs) with a combination of hospital and/or community setting
- Obtain and maintain education credentials and certifications specific to practice area
- Active or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of Prince Edward Island
- experience in public health nursing, community, maternal/newborn, or pediatric nursing will be considered an asset.
- experience in health promotion.
- successful completion of PEI's Immunization Competency Module is expected within one month of hire.
- possess a valid driver license and access to a reliable vehicle.
- a good previous work and attendance record.
- proficiency working in a computerized environment with various software programs is an asset.
- additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.
