Role Summary 

The Registered Nurse (RN) is a member of the health care team providing direct nursing care to a patient, or group of patients that requires independent judgment in determining nursing interventions and the interpretation of information for care. The RN promotes the achievement and maintenance of each patient’s optimal level of health and function; develops and maintains a high level of competency to meet the standards of nursing practice; promote interdisciplinary teamwork; performs related and allied duties and contributes to the orderly and efficient operation of the unit/department. 

The RN uses their nursing knowledge and functions as a care provider and team leader. This role includes a range of nursing expertise from novice to experience, in medical/surgical nursing, and for a variety of patient populations. They provide care, support, education, and information to patients/families and contribute to the development of new procedures to meet individual needs. Work involves assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating a plan of care, in collaboration with other health care providers, and providing leadership, direction and coordination to professional and non-professional nursing personnel. 

Clinical Practice 

  • Nurses ae actively engaged in providing direct care to clients within a multi-disciplinary team. They are responsible for administering medication, monitoring vital signs, developing and implementing care plans 
  • Design, develop and implement action plans to address client’s needs in collaboration with the patient and family, and other health care professionals 
  • Maintain competence in clinical skills, managing client care and recognizing recurring themes relevant to the area of practice 
  • Use comprehensive assessment (using objective, subjective, verbal and nonverbal data), critical inquiry, technology, and research to provide safe, competent nursing services relevant to the area of practice. 
  • Evaluate a patient’s health status, health concerns, response to illness and ability to manage health care needs and functions as a patient advocate. 
  • Monitor, observe, and record information relating to the patient’s physical and psychological status to facilitate evaluation and modification of patient care and treatment 
  • Assess learning needs and provide instruction to patients and their families in the areas of health and rehabilitative practices, life-style adaptation and self-care measures 
  • In collaboration with the patient/family determine the discharge plan, plan of care for home and links to community agencies; assist patients to navigate health system processes and provide the patient with strategies to work within the system 
  • Share relevant information with patients regarding their health and refer the client to other sources for information when appropriate 
  • Take a lead role within the health care team, which supports a multi-disciplinary approach to care 
  • Coordinate and lead nursing and auxiliary staff activities related to the care and treatment of assigned patients 

Leadership 

  • Use current literature/research and performance indicators to support evidence-based practice 
  • Adhere to routine precautions and infection prevention and control techniques according to facility policy 
  • Proactively seek professional development opportunities for themselves and others 
  • Attend and /or participate in programs to reinforce nursing education and to remain current with developments and changing trends in the nursing field. 
  • Act as a mentor and /or preceptor students, beginning practitioners and practicing nurses by demonstrating care and treatment techniques, explaining routines, and sharing specialized nursing experiences 
  • Maintain a psychologically and physically safe environment and reports all safety hazards 

Document client care activities consistent with policy, system requirements and scope of employment 

  • Identify clinical practice issues affecting patient safety quality outcomes and implement best practice patient care standards 

  • Follow and adhere to all policy, ethical, and legal guidelines. 

Statement of Qualifications: 

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing or Diploma in Nursing 

  • Entry level nursing experience 

  • Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) 

  • Successful completion of all employer and facility required training 

  • Active or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of Prince Edward Island

External candidates may be eligible to receive a $8,000 Nursing Incentive, plus a $5,000 Rural or $8,000 Student Loan Incentive depending on location of employment. To be eligible for recruitment incentives candidates must hold a 1.0 FTE, this can be a full-time role or a combination of part-time positions. Relocation Assistance may be available to part or full-time candidates.
